About Whirlpool, History and Headquarters Information
Whirlpool was founded in the year 1911. The company has been active for almost 107 years now. The founders of the company were Emory Upton and Louis Upton. The company history began inside a machine shop owned by Emory Upton. When Emory’s nephew, Louis had purchased a patent for a manual washing machine, the pair worked on creating a special kind of motor that would make the machine operate on its own as well. Soon, the company was selling their motorized wringer-type washing machines as well, to the company known as Commonwealth Edison and Sears Roebuck.
In order to avoid becoming dependent on Sears sales only, the Upton family began to sell under their own label as well, known as Whirlpool. The sales had increased dramatically, causing the company to even merge with the 1900 Corporation in the year 1929. The company was virtually unaffected by the Great Depression and also during WWII. The company factory was also used to make ammunition as well. In such response to the post-war consumer demand for convenience products, the company had launched a range of various types of home laundry products including wringer and also automatic washers, dryers, and irons as well. By the year 1978, annual revenues had exceeded $2 billion. During the year 1966, Whirlpool had purchased Warwick Electronics - which was a major television producer for Sears. It had also included the division Thomas Organ Company as well. Whirlpool had exited the television market by the year 1976, by selling all the operations to Japan's Sanyo Electronic Company, but had retained all the organ business for electronic technology. The company had acquired Kitchenaid in the year 1986 and also in the year 1988 as well, and had purchased a majority share in the Philips brand too. As of the year 2006, the company had acquired Maytag and all of its brands as well, including Jenn-Air, Magic Chef, Amana, Admiral and Hoover too. In the year 2017, Sears and Whirlpool had announced that they were ending their 101 year-old agreement which had allowed Whirlpool appliances to be sold at Sears and also Kmart stores as well.
