About Unilever, History and Headquarters Information
Unilever was founded in the year 1929. The company has been operational for almost 89 years now. The founders of the company were Samuel van den Bergh, William Lever, James Darcy Lever and Georg Schicht Singrose. During the 1930s, the company had grown large, and new ventures were launched in Africa and as well as Latin America as well. The Nazi occupation of Europe during World War II had meant that Unilever was unable to reinvest its capital into Europe - so it instead acquired new businesses in the UK and as well as the USA too.
The brand named Sunsilk was first launched in the UK in the year 1954. Dove was then first launched in the USA in the year 1957. The company had taken full ownership of Frosted Foods in the year 1957, which it renamed as Birds Eye. The US-based Good Humor ice cream business was also then acquired in the year 1961 as well. During the 1970s, through various acquisitions and takeovers, the company had gained almost 30 per cent of the Western European ice cream market as well. In the year 1982, the company's management had decided to reposition itself from an unwieldy conglomerate to a more concentrated FMCG company as well. In the year 1993, the company had acquired Breyers from Kraft - which had made the company the largest ice cream manufacturer in the USA. Then in the year 1996, the company had merged Elida Gibbs and Lever Brothers in its UK operations as well. It had purchased Helene Curtis, significantly expanding its presence in the USA shampoo and deodorant market too. The purchase had brought the company, the Suave and Finesse hair-care product brands and also Degree deodorant brand too as well. In the year 1997, the company had sold its speciality chemicals division, including National Starch & Chemical, Quest, Unichema and Crosfield to Imperial Chemical Industries for almost 4.9 billion UK Pounds. Therefore, Unilever had established a sustainable agriculture programme in the year 1998. In the year 2004, Unilever had sold off its share in Rushdi food industry to the Bashir family as well - which started to use the Baracke brand name too. Then in the year 2014, Roshadi food industries were one of the three largest tahini producers in Israel and also one of the largest producers of Tahini across the globe. During the year 2009, the company had agreed to acquire the personal care business of Sara Lee Corporation, including brands such as Radox, Badedas and Duschdas as well, strengthening its category leadership in skin cleansing and deodorants too. Sara Lee takeover was completed in the year 2010. As of the year 2013, the company had increased its stake in its Indian unit, known as Hindustan Unilever, to 67 per cent for around 2.45 billion Euros. Finally, in the year 2014, the company had announced the purchase of the Camay brand globally and also the Zest brand outside of North America and even the Caribbean brand from P&G. The headquarters of the company is based at 800 Sylvan Avenue. The name of the place is Englewood Cliffs, while the name of the state is New Jersey, USA. The pin code of the area is 07632.
