The Pantry Inc is a covenience store based in Cary, North California and was founded by Sam Wornom and Truby Proctor, Jr in 1967. The company expanded slowly at first and was described as being steady and stable. In 1987, the invester Montrose Capital acquired shares from Wornom and Proctor and in 1999 the company started trading publicly.
The Pantry was one of the United States' largest convenience store chains and the leading independently operated chain in the southeastern U.S. The company has been operating more than 1600 stores as of 2014. Most stores are located in the Carolinas and Florida and others are located in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Indiana, and Georgia.
The headquarter of the company is situated in Cary, North California, United States. Previously, it was in Sanford, North California. The Pantry offered its own private label "Kangaroo" brand of gasoline, and operated 250 in-store quick-service restaurants. Additionally, 285 stores sold Marathon gasoline under a co-branding agreement.
