About Snapchat
History
Snapchat has had a very interesting history. We’ve mentioned above that it was founded by three guys while they were still at the University of Stanford.
The original idea of Snapchat came from Reggie Brown. He shared it with Evan Spiegel who would later look for Robert Murphy. Robert Murphy coded the app and brought the ideal to life. Interestingly, Reggie Brown would later be forced out of the company by Spiegel and Murphy. He was paid 157 million dollars in 2014 to go away.
The parent company was originally called Snapchat Inc. and the app had been launched as Snapchat Picaboo. The parent company would later be changed into Snap Inc. and the app to Snapchat. They did that in 2016 when they were introducing their first hardware product, the smart glasses, in 2016.
The smart glasses have smart cameras that can record 10-second videos and post them on Snapchat.
Services
Snapchat is a popular social media app. Some people might still wonder, what exactly does Snapchat do?
The founders came up with an idea of posts that disappeared after a short while, which did not exist on the other social media platforms at the time.
Snapchat allowed users to post messages, pictures, and videos that disappeared after a short duration. That catered to most people’s concerns of social media companies holding a large portion of their data. As a result, Snapchat quickly rose in popularity and attracted millions of users to its platform.
Snapchat has evolved to become a powerful tool for marketers and brands. Celebrity endorsements and brand promotions are now being pushed through Snapchat. Apparently, 4 in every 10 Snapchat users say they discovered a new brand or product from Snapchat posts.

According to Snapchat, 61% of its users are female. That’s no surprise given that it involves a lot of visuals and bright colours. Females love bright colours and anything to do with personal photos and videos.
It seems that Snapchat appeals to teens more than it appeals to elder people. It also appeals more to females and males. Snapchat is a playful app, with interesting cartoonish filters and features. This is important information for marketers who’d be targeting the young demographic.
