About Medtronic

History

Medtronic started as a medical repair business in 1949, and it was established by American engineers and businessman, Earl Bakken and Palmer Hermundsile who happened to be Earl’s brother-in-law. However, the firm made its first medical device, a battery-powered pacemaker – the first of its kind – in 1957. It was on this product that the firm has built its success, going on to produce multiple technologically advanced medical equipment.

Discussion on the success story of Medtronic cannot be complete without talking about the mergers and acquisitions that have been completed by the firm thus far. This can be seen as a major growth strategy for Medtronic as the firm now has a reach spanning over 150 countries. Since its establishment, Medtronic has achieved over sixty-six acquisitions with the first of such came in 1998 with the purchase of Physio-Control Corporation – although the firm would later spin-off Physio-Control in 2006.

As a matter of emphasis; there have been some key acquisitions that have greatly affected the firm’s strategic direction. One of such acquisitions is that of Irish medical products manufacturer, Covidien in 2014. This made it possible for Medtronic to move its legal headquarters to Ireland. Other notable ones include the acquisitions of Kyphon, MiniMed, and Mazor Robotics to mention just a few.

Services

Medtronic is into the production of a wide range of medical devices used in treating or managing different conditions like chronic pain, obesity, Down syndrome, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, respiratory disorders, kidney disorders, and many more. The development and production of these devices are done through the firm’s business units like cardiac rhythm disease management, spinal & biologics, diabetes, cardiovascular, and neuromodulation.

More specifically, Medtronic produces devices such as bone conduction hearing systems, endoscopic ultrasound products, defibrillator, insulin pump systems, smoke evacuation systems, cardiac mapping products, peripheral & biliary stents, hysteroscopy systems, infusion sets, and so on. Medtronic also devotes its resources towards the development of surgical technologies and even manufactured ventilators in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is good to note that Medtronic also makes specific products for veterinary treatment/care.

Medtronic manufactures products that can be used by healthcare professionals, as well as patients and their caregivers. The company also provides value-added services like the measures taken to educate customers on the use of the devices.

  • Paul Twomey says:

I have been lying here at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen MA for 5 days due to a complication from recent back surgery. In prefer to assess the problem I need an MRI which, in turn requires the presence of a Medtronic technician to place my Medtronic’s pace maker into a quiet mode during the procedure. Staff here have indicated they have made repeated attempts have a tech person come from Boston to Methuen (approx 25 mi) in order to be able to proceed with the MRI. I might add that I have been in extreme pain during this period. I find it hard to believe Medtronics cannot spare a technician to come out and assist. In my opinion this apparent lack of concern represents a complete lack of indifference, if not wanton negligence in a company which prides itself on its products and customer service. I would respectfully request a response either by email (ptwomey@verizon.net) or to my cell phone at 978 857 8864. This coming Monday will mark day 7 in my current situation. If I do not receive a response I intend to call the corporate office in hopes of finding an ear willing to listen. Thank you. Paul Twomey (Esq)
