In the year 1985, a subsidiary was created by Peter Kiewit Sons, known as Kiewit Diversified Group, to manage the corporation's business - which was not related to construction at all. The company was spun off as a separate entity and changed its name to Level 3 Communications in the year 1998. This was to signify an increased focus on various communication services. The same year, the company had filed its own IPO or Initial Public Offering.
In the year 2003, the company had taken over Genuity. In between the years 2005 and 2007, the company had purchased several other companies including former rivals WilTel Communications, Looking Glass Networks, Broadwing Corporation, Progress Telecom, and Telcove. Then in the year 2004, the company had acquired ICG Communications' wholesale dial-up business for almost $35 million. In the year2006, the company had taken over the rest of ICG Communications for $163 million, while also taking over ICG's fiber network and nationwide Points of Presence as well. By the year 2010, all of these companies were integrated together. In the year 2011, the company was responsible for acquiring fellow Tier 1 provider known as Global Crossing. The following year, Level 3 was contracted by a European content provider, known as Voxility to provide 250 Gbit/s or more to Voxility's three main data centres, located in North America and also in Europe. The company was also contracted by the US Department of Defense's Defense Information Systems Agency to provide fiber-cable operations, as well as maintenance, including an IP-based infrastructure under a ten-year, with an indefinite contract which had a combined maximum value of approximately $411 million. Then in the year 2014, the company had taken over TW Telecom as well. This was followed by the acquisition of Black Lotus in the year 2015. Level 3 was purchased by Century Link in the year 2016, for almost $34 billion. The merger deal was approved by the USA Department of Justice, and it was closed by the year 2017. As part of the merger, the company was required to divest 24 individual fiber optic lines spanning 30 city pairs, as it was needed for the USA Department of Justice. Apart from that, it was also required to divest of metro ethernet markets in Boise, Albuquerque and Tucson, in order to satisfy the anti-trust requirements as well.
