About Dallas Police

History

The creation of The Dallas Police Department happened more than 120 years ago. There are 3,640 sworn officers and 556 civilians who are part of the Dallas Police Team. The department is known for building an environment of decent and caring behavior. The department takes exceptional contentment in serving to make Dallas a secure place to reside, work, and visit.

Before the election of the first Chief of Police, a town marshal and deputies took care of Dallas since the year 1856. The first Chief of Police, of the Dallas Police Department, was J.C. Arnold, who was elected in the year 1881. He held the post for 17 years. By the year 1898, Police officers used to guard Dallas on horseback. The Department bought a vehicle and two motorbikes in the year 1907. As per the officer down memorial page, there were 84 police officer deaths reported, between the years1892 and 2016 during their line of duty.
