About Caterpillar

History

Caterpillar was started by Benjamin Holt when he was trying to solve the issue of bulkiness with steam engines of the 17th century. When he couldn’t find a solution, he bought a patented tractor design from Richard Hornsby and called it Caterpillar.

The name Caterpillar came from Holt’s photographer Charles Clements. He observed that the tractor Hold had bought moved like a caterpillar. Hold decide that would be the name for it.

Services

Caterpillar is known for its heavy machinery and engines. It has a diverse portfolio of products though. Apart from its engine and gas turbines, it produces defence and combat systems. Caterpillar also builds electronics and agricultural equipment. They have also been offering financial products and brand licensing services in recent times.

Facts

Caterpillar used to get military contracts during World War 1. Most of its production at the time was focused on fulfilling military orders. When the war ended, the company was left in limbo because its products had no demand. The engines it was producing for the military were not suitable for farmers.

Caterpillar grew rapidly during the postwar construction race after world war two. Its first business venture outside the US was in 1950. After venturing outside, it quickly grew into a multination company the provided mechanical solutions all over the world.
