Jim Umpleby
Chairman & CEO
Jim Umpleby is the Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caterpillar Inc. He became the CEO in January 2017. In December 2018, he became the chairman of the board of directors. Umpleby is in charge of the operations of the entire company.
Umpleby was the group president of the energy and transportation business of the company before being appointed the CEO. Before that, he was serving as the vice president of Solar Turbines, a subsidiary of Caterpillar that manufactures turbine systems and industrial gas.
Umpleby is credited with building a new corporate strategy that has promoted profitable growth. He has expanded product offerings and enhanced focus on operational excellence.

About Caterpillar
History
Caterpillar was started by Benjamin Holt when he was trying to solve the issue of bulkiness with steam engines of the 17th century. When he couldn’t find a solution, he bought a patented tractor design from Richard Hornsby and called it Caterpillar.
The name Caterpillar came from Holt’s photographer Charles Clements. He observed that the tractor Hold had bought moved like a caterpillar. Hold decide that would be the name for it.

Caterpillar grew rapidly during the postwar construction race after world war two. Its first business venture outside the US was in 1950. After venturing outside, it quickly grew into a multination company the provided mechanical solutions all over the world.
