In 1984, applied materials was the first US company to manufacture semiconductor equipment. It opened technology centres in Japan and China. This helped in technology transfer towards US.
In 1996, it acquired Opal technologies and Orbot instruments. Both were Israel companies. Orbot manufactured systems to inspect silicon pattern and Opal developed high speed metrology systems. Later in 2008, it acquired Baccini an Italian company that designed and manufactured solar cells.
