84 Lumber has been in existence for more than six decades, and it has enjoyed fast growth in business over the past 60 years, still counting. The company was founded by Joe Hardy with the help of two of his brothers (Norman and Bob Hardy) and two of their family friends (Ed Ryan and Jack Kunkle).

They purchased land and buildings for a “cash and carry” lumberyard. In the 1960s, this company entered a new phase of expansion, and it became a sole family business. The strategy of overhead reduction implemented in the stores, as well as a no frills approach in the operation of their warehouse, was the driving force behind their giant strides during this era.

The cost was brought to the lowest minimum. Business was good for 84 Lumber in the 1970s. They were able to open an additional 229 stores. 84 Lumber made the list of ProSales’ “Dealer 100” in 1991. They have 10,000 employees.
