  • Paul says:

I recommend you guys drop all sponsorship of the Timbers and Thorns until Merrit Paulson sells both clubs

  • Robert Millis says:

I’m a long-time customer. I am also a long-time fan and season ticket holder for the Portland Thorns.

Internal and external investigations have made very clear that PTFC owner Merritt Paulson was not only complicit in verbal abuse and sexual misconduct toward Thorns players by coach Paul Riley, but also provided cover for and continued to publicly support Riley. He was asked by others in the league if there was any reason to be concerned about hiring Riley, and he lied.

Paulson knew. He protected the abuser. He is responsible for abuse continuing at other teams.

You are sponsoring his company. Until you pull sponsorship and demand that Paulson sell the teams, you are supporting him.

Other sponsors have already pulled out and demanded change. Please join them immediately or your reputation will forever be tied to Paulson and the abuse of young women in Portland and national soccer clubs.

    Thank you,
    Rob Millis

  • Benjamin C White says:

    Dear 76:

I am writing as a supporter of the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns to ask for your help in ensuring a safe work environment for the players and other employees in the organization.

As you are aware, former Portland Thorns players Sinead Farrelly and Mana Shim have accused former Thorns coach Paul Riley of sexual coercion. According to the Yates report, The players went to Timbers/Thorns owner Merritt Paulson, general manager Gavin Wilkinson, and the Human Resources director to report Riley’s behavior in 2015.

Per the Yates report, the Thorns carried out an internal investigation and found that Riley had violated club policies; as a result, Riley’s contract was not renewed. The Thorns shared a report with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) about its investigation, but did not publicly disclose that Riley’s contract was not renewed for cause. Wilkinson provided a positive recommendation for Riley while Paulson continued public support and positive interaction with Riley.

In a separate incident, President of Business Mike Golub allegedly made sexual remarks to Cindy Parlow Cone, head coach of Thorns FC at the time. According to a recent report from the Oregonian, he also fosters a ‘toxic’ work environment.

Though Riley may be gone, the leaders that are responsible for the workplace environment of PTFC have not left the organization and have not implemented sufficient systemic and legal changes to address what has happened under their stewardship of the club.

As you talk with the Timbers/Thorns organization about your sponsorship, I ask that you do the following:
    – Express your concerns about how the 2015 investigation was handled.
    – Ask about their plans to make the organization a safe and productive work environment for everyone — players and employees alike.
    – Ask the organization about the current investigations and their plans for transparency of the results
    – Demand the removal of Gavin Wilkinson and Mike Golub from both Timbers and Thorns FC and urge current Owner Merritt Paulson and Peregrine Sports to sell the team

    Thank you,
    Benjamin White
